Welcome to Studying English Online Monday, Jul 9 2007

This blog is the first of what I hope will be many posts. The blog has been created to stimulate discussion on the teaching of English to students and invites students to participate in the blog discussion. I am interested in developing online activities for students and any submissions or suggestions are welcome.
In Semester Two 2007, I am teaching three novels:
- Fahrenheit 451 (1953) by Ray Bradbury – a classic and insightful text with many lessons for students in the 21st Century. This text will be studied by Year 11 Standard English students. See our study site here.
- Originator (1998) by Claire Carmichael, is a text in the Science Fiction genre and very much a modern day version of Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World (1931). Check out the Wikipedia page I will have year 9 students develop as part of their studies: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Originator_by_Claire_Carmichael
- Dark Wind Blowing ( 2001) by Jackie French. French’s novella addresses the issue of bullying under a theme of power. The text has a sub plot of the protagonist wanting is life to be more exciting – like the movies – until his life becomes like one. Year 8 students will examine the purpose and effectiveness of texts that pursue a moral theme.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_Wind_Blowing
The plan is for students to participate in this blog. Along with other contributors, students are encouraged to develop their ideas about the writing of text and reflect on the themes, issues, ideas, contexts, concepts and values in texts.
I will regularly update the blog with planning and learning activities and add thoughts about the texts.
So, welcome to those who read and enter the world of text.
